Looking at ordering some xt brakes, they come with two options, with and without fins, do you need to use ice tech rotors with fins?

If they are the same price, you might as well get the finned version. If not, just go regular.0

So in reality it would make bugger all difference if I go for the finned or not0 -

Pretty much, and even if there is a difference I doubt it would be noticeable
Although the fins look kinda cool0 -

That's what I'd say
But you can buy the finned pads aftermarket so if you needed a replacement pads you could still try them0 -

Kind of agree with this, I've got to the bottom of some big descents and had the distinct smell of burning, but it's impossible to tell how hot my brakes would have been without the pads and icetech rotors. If there's no price difference, get the finned, then replace with normal pads when they wear out.0 -
So if I went with
Shimano XT M785 Disc Brake
Black, Front - Right Hand Lever - 1000mm Hose - I-Spec B
Shimano XT M785 Disc Brake
Black, Rear - Left Hand Lever - 1700mm Hose - I-Spec B
I should be good?0 -

can I see your test data that proves this please0 -
I tried the finned pads in my Zee brakes. Made absolutely no difference at all.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

I have the finned pads but took them out after a particulary muddy ride because they clogged up with carp. Replaced them with the spare Shimano non finned pads and noticed exactly zero difference.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0

The only advantage I have personally seen with the 'fins' is that they make the pad easier to remove as you can pinch the two together and pull. But it's not like it's difficult to remove them without.0

Unless you overheat the stock pad, then clearly you won't notice any difference with finned ones.....and if you overheat finned ones then non finned May have been worse but you will never know for sure.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
