So I am upgrading the front brake disc rotor from 160-180mm on my hardtail. I know I need a new rotor and an adapter but i am slightly puzzled by the Front Post/IS terminology. My set up currently is

Genesis Core 25.2 2011- Rockshox Tora K 120mm travel, Shimano BR-M445 with 160mm rotors

Can someone explain what these different terms are and tell me what mine is?

Thanks....

  • Post mount is two litte posts pointing backwards on your fork so the bolts are in line with the direction of travel of the bike. IS the bolts go into the frame at 90 deg to the direction of travel to the fork

As far as I can see, the forks you have are post mount, so if you're currently using a 160mm rotor, then the brake calliper should be mounted direct to the forks without an adapter (as post mount forks fit 160 rotors as standard).

If that's all correct, then you need to find a F180 (or front 180) PM-PM adapter, which basically just moves the calliper 10mm further out (as measured radially from the axle). Sometimes also called a +20 post-to-post adapter (as it allows a 20mm larger disc diameter)

this one should do the trick: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/POST-to-POST- ... 4897.l4275
  • Thanks Woolliferkins, when you say "go into the frame" what do you mean? i find it harder to visulise when the frame is nowhere near the the front brake....

Go into the fork, not frame.
