which rear deralliuer 8/9 speed

I am currently running an eight speed rear cassette with an xtr rear hanger.

i need to replace the rear hanger, does it need to be an eight speed or will a 9 or even 10 speed work as well for then upgrading the rest at a later date

    Do you actually mean rear mech?

    If so 8 or 9 speed will work, not 10

    yes rear mech, sorry

    so i will be fine with an 8 or 9 speed.

    do i need to stick to shimano or will other brands work with the shimano shifters eg SRAM

    Nope. Need to match mech and shitfter at the rear.
