I'm thinking of getting a winter bike come tourer and have pretty much decided on a Geoff Smith Reynolds 725 bike. They come with a 9 speed triple so I was wondering what differences I'll find when riding as apose to my road bike which has a 10 speed compact ?

  • Normally you would find that the steps between gears is smaller than with your compact but of course that does depend on what cassette is fitted to either bike.

If you are buying a touring bike to actually tour on then you will be carrying extra weight/luggage and the lower gearing of the smaller ring should mean that you can still get up hills with all of that weight on board.

You will probably fined it shifts better too being 9 speed.

The small front chainring may well get little use if you are a strong rider.
