I'm finding XC boring nowadays.

  • You don't get on with continental either judging by the quotes at the bottom of your post! I would also have to question haw many maxxis and panaracer tyres someone who has less than £20 a week disposable income has tried on a bike that is a 2011/12 model. Something is stopping you enjoying riding, I would suggest you stop looking at your bike I don't get the impression that's the problem from what you've said and how you've answered every piece of advice. I think you need to have a good think about what you're not enjoying.

Woodmonkey - You make a very good point. The comment on the tyres on my signature were referring to my Race & Speed Kings (I had at least one puncture every week).

I have tried my friends' bike on the branded tyres and since 2011 I've ridden Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1 and CG XC 2.1. Maxxis I've had a go on Medusa 1.8, Advantage Exception 2.1, and Holy Roller 2.4. The Holy Rollers were the only ones that I felt comfortable with.

But again, I will think on what you've said and I will figure out what's wrong with me rather than the bike.
My god road cycling is scary! I'm going to keep my relaxing rides to the trails where everything is green, fast and less crazy.

I find XC boring too, but I'm finding mountain biking in general a bit toss at the minute. I've basically *gasp* converted to a roadie. I've simply ran out of trails that I can do within a 35 mile radius of where I live that I haven't done many times before and i'm not prepared to drive or take the train to find new ones.
  • I go through phases of getting bored with riding. I need variety to keep me interested, if I ride the same place 2 times on the trot I find it hard to want to get out again.

Luckily, there is loads down here to explore and mates are always coming up with new ride ideas to keep the juices flowing.

Do you ride alone or in a group? If you can, try and join a club or see if anyone on here is local and arrange a ride!

This is, in my opinion at least, the single best piece of advice anyone can get on how to enjoy their riding more. Joining a club tends to cost peanuts, gives you a group of mates, plenty of banter, help and advice, and new trails to ride. You get an awful lot of benefit from finding a good club to join.

You don't always have to ride with them, but just like riding the same trail over and over, riding on your own over and over does get boring.

When you run out of exciting local trails it's time to get out the shovel & rake and get creative. You can't rely on the trail faries to keep you supplied with sweet singletrack.
It's surprising what you can get done in a day.

Surely even riding the same trail every time is more interesting than road riding. At least the trail changes with the seasons, and you're not just sat there grinding away on the pedals while trying not to get killed by cars.

    This ^^^^^

I used to be a roadie. Actually I was quite a good one, won some races, blah, blah. 20 years ago though. Don't ride on the road at all now, cos it scares the sh!t out of me. At least if I injure myself off road it's my fault!

I have just moved to Whistler and can honestly say the two hour ride I did today was amongst the most fun riding I have done in ages - snow on the ground, new trails, spooky noises in the woods (ice chunks dropping from the branches all over the place kept making me think there were things out there!). I was riding my old heckler with a hodge podge of parts ('03 Bombers, a purgatory front tyre, TT Larsen rear, hope M4 front brake, Magura Julie rear) and the bike made no difference to the fun of the ride - just pedal it up and ride it down. :D

You don't need more travel, just better 100mm forks. If your feet get kicked off the pedals, get SPDs

I believe duct taping your feet to the pedals works as well.

    Or cable ties?

Cable ties are just a little bit too roadie for me, I mean with duct tape you get the extra splash protection that is required with mountain biking

You could always go without pedals, then they won't kick your feet off. Also a massive weight saving.

I see alot of new bikes comes like this now for this exact reason

MTBNoob I don't even think you should fret too much about the bike. There's loads of good trails out of the door from Steyning. I know because I ride them...although am based more Brighton way. There's a whole string of descents on the North Face of the SDW - all the way from Steyning to Brighton to get your heart in your mouth (just keep an eye out for horses), and then when you reach Brighton you've the singletrack around Stanmer as well as what you've already mentioned in Wild Park.

Additionally, If you live in Steyning there's a load over Chanctonbury Ring as well (although maybe that is what you're bored with?!)
