Chainring bolt washers

Hi, I'm thinking of converting from 3x9 to 1x9 and have 2007 truvativ stylo crankset. I have heard that washers are needed on the chainring bolts to make them shorter but where do you get these washers from and which side of the ring do you put them on? Thanks

assuming you don't want to use a bash: http://www.tredz.co.uk/.ID-Single-Chain ... wwodTHcAbA
google search: "single ring chainring bolts"0 -
Thanks and I'm not planning on using a bash guard, but I'm thinking of getting the race face wide narrow chainring and race face recommend 8.5mm bolts as opposed to 6.5mm so where do I get those? Google search is surprisingly not useful0

Whoops, mindblown away, sorry about that. They do seem a bit expensive though, and I heard you can just use washers to make the effective length of the long bolts shorter though, do you know where you could get those? Many thanks, bit of a rookie here0

to be honest, I'd buy the right gear for the job!
If it says you need 8.5mm bolts, I'd get some tbh. If you buy washers and they don't work, you'll have to buy twice!
There are cheaper bolts out there, just gotta look!0 -
Fair enough, thanks both of you. Btw what are the problems with sticking with a long cage derailleur on a 1x9 set up? Thanks0

Basically none as it will work, it just means the chain will be longer. Probably easier to drop your chain off the front ring , especially if you aren't running a chain guide.0

Cheers but I figure it will be more expensive to buy a normal single ring and a upper and lower guide than the narrow wide ring so I'll see if it works. Thanks for all the help.0
