Problem with Quad Tork hydrailic front caliper

My brake is stick ON suddenly - not sure what's causing it and would like to fix myself if possible - lack of funds is making me put off a trip to the LBS...

There's no resistance so I know it needs bleeding or new fluids entirely, but the callipers are really stuck on the disc - it does turn but not really ride-able. I prised the pads apart with a screwdriver, but as soon as I re-apply the brake - they stick on again. I've tried adjusting the calliper by undoing it and holding the brake while I refasten it, no improvement though.

Also had the pads out and rubbed a bit of surface rust off the edges, no joy.

Will bleeding / replacing the fluids resolve this or is there a more serious issue?

    Please describe what is happening.

From what I read the lever moves all the way to the bar.

And the pads are on the disc the whole time?

Sounds like needs a strip clean and a bleed.

  • Hi,

The pads are against the disk all the time, not so much that the wheel won't move at all, but it's not rideable.

There's practically no resistance at the lever - it goes all the way to the grip with no change in resistance.

When you say "strip" do you know anywhere that gives instructions on stripping these to component parts? Assuming I start by undoing the giant hex nut on the side, but not really messed with a bike caliper before, so could do with a guide? Not sure if QUAD still trades as i can't find a website for them? :(

looks useful! But those brakes have a return spring, should mine? Cos it doesn't!

This sounds like the pistons are sticking in the bores in the out position, remove the calliper from the bike and the pads from the calliper.

CAREFULLY squeeze the lever to move the pistons out a bit further, clean round the pistons using the same fluid as the brake takes (DOT or mineral, make sure you use the right one!), then push the pistons back in by hand and repeat a few times, fully clean off and refit.

You should have a spring, it's not a return spring it just holds the pads in place and stops them rattling.
