Both Cancellara and Contador's mechanics talk about the reduced friction of longer chains in the past. B/c the cage is less stressed you don't introduce so much tension via the B-spring. Simples.

Walser worked with Focus on the Izalco Chrono. Whether he has subsequently worked with Canyon I couldn't tell you
