The Boardman has a better fork but the Rockrider has better transmission. Either is good but I would probably go for the Boardman.
  • I looked at both and it was very close, but the RR 8.1 won and I could not be happier. You'll probably find that a lot of people champion the RR when looking at bikes in this £ range - I certainly did during my 12 months of indecisiveness!

Huge contributing factors for me were the lifetime warranty and both the initial and ongoing service at Decathlon. I'm not really a fan of H!

I'll pop in to Decathlon and take a look at the RockRider then. I had a look at the Boardman in Halfords and it's a nice looking bike but I'm not too great spec wise with MTB as I'm roadie. I'm completely lost when comparing forks...

The recon on the rockrider is the smoother and better damped of the forks, but the epicon is more adjustable and substantially lighter.
  • I also find that the remote (handlebar mounted) LO is useful on the RR, which I dont think the Boardman has...? However, some of those that are far more knowledgeable and experienced riders may say that LO is not that important.

Best advice I got after the initial guidance on spec (which is important when it comes to value for your £) was to go and test ride some bikes and see how they feel.

BTW I'm a Noob so feel free to take what I say with a pinch of salt!

  • I'd go Boardman for the 120mm travel fork which I think is better suited to trail riding at Cannock etc.

The remote lock out isn't a must for me as it will only be used for trail riding. By the sounds of it they're both pretty similar bikes although I've read a few reviews for the Rockrider which state that the handlebars are on the short side and a lot of people have upgraded them.
