Long term problem with cassette.

I have a 9 speed cassette which will not go through all my gears, consistently missing one or two gearing down and up. Is it possible the LBS put an 8 speed chain on, instead of a 9 ? I can adjust the gears till I'm blue in the face, and as far as I'm aware the rear derailleur hasn't been damaged. How can you tell the difference between an 8 and 9 speed chain?

A 9 speed has it stamped on every link....or you could measure the width (external).
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Look up the specs and measure the width with calipers. Some makes have clues stamped on the side plates, others are anonymous.

Can you see if it's fouling the next sprocket when it's in gear?

When were the cables last replaced?

I had this problem, I replaced derrailleur jockey wheels and bearings and the problem went away
