You're supposed to change them when they're worn. How long it takes for them to become worn enough to require replacing depends on numerous factors.

  • That's a good question and i guess difficult to answer. I change mine when my left knee tells me to. I'm not sure what it is about worn cleats that makes my knee hurt, maybe un-clipping is more difficult or the amount of float / how easy they float changes.
I get about 12 months out of a pair but I only ride twice a week in summer and once a week in winter.

I find they look worn very quickly but last ages, it depends how far you walk with them on, the yellow bits wear down pretty quick but they don't really affect the cleats performance,

Mine are over ten years old and have been used on and off road, must have done 20k miles and still work OK.

Ah, didn't spot you meant SLs. The ones I referred to above were SPDs. Done about 2500 on my current SLs and they seem fine.

  • I'm finding that the need to replace mine has coincided with the need to use overshoes meaning my left shoe struggles to clip in correctly. Generally last about a year for me though, left wears faster than right

Far out! Only 12 months? I made the change last month – going to keep a closer eye on wear and tear.

How do they get worn out though, is it just from walking? Because I find I can't mash the cleat into the pedal like I could with SPDs, so wondering if it's ever just from constant use?

I recall reading somewhere that they should be changed when the 2 blue (or yellow) pads at the rear have worn down. Seems to make sense as you will then be walking on the working part of the cleat.
