mtb'er trying the road so give me a chance!! :D

iv bought a cube peleton with the new sora group set but im not sure about the wheels. they are Shimano r500, iv noticed that road wheel state the cassette size so does that limit my wheel choice in that my sora is still only 9 speed?

cheers

No, wheels are designed to take a variety of different cassettes, some needing spacers. What is it about the wheels that you are not sure about?

Some wheels won't take a 9 speed cassette. Shimano style hubs can have taller splines (in the same pattern as 9 speed) that only take a ten or eleven speed cassette. This is to stop the cassette digging into the hub so it's a good idea. Hubs with the smaller height splines will take any cassette, but the tall ones only take ten or eleven. So check before you buy.

Not sure I understand the question. The R500 wheels probably have a freehub that will accept any 8 / 9 / 10 speed Shimano pattern cassette if that's what you're asking.

I just put R501 wheels (virtually identical to yours) on my winter bike. First ran Tiagra 9 speed but now swapped to 105 10 speed. They seem OK for a budget, winter wheel.

Tall splines Shimano stopped doing that with the 7800 series hubs didn't they. Given 11 speed cassette are short splined they will fit on all shimano hubs bar the tall splined 7800 series.

All modern shimano hubs use the same spline, the 11 speed hubs though have a longer freehub allowing them to accept an 11 speed cassette.

Didn't know that. Seems a shame as the tall splines won't get cut into. I have them on a set of Ultegra wheels (6700 from memory, might be 6600).
