Bike for College

Hello everybody,
I will be attending a university in St. Paul, Minnesota next fall. Because I will not be taking a car with me, I will need an alternate mode of transportation while I am up there. Of course the bus is an option, but I would like to save money and purchase an affordable, but durable bike of some sort. I've looked at multiple Schwimm bikes, such as the Racer and the Prelude. Those are obviously fairly expensive for a beginner, but very nice as well. Any other suggestions for me?
