Newbie pedals/shoes question

Hi,
I'm a complete biking beginner - my neighbour is selling a bike with these pedals so my question is simply: which shoes/cleats should I be looking to get for them.

All suggestions or advice is very welcome.

    Those are pedals designed for (old style) toe clips - but without the cages fitted, they are pretty much useless. If you are a brand new rider, just replace them with a pair of flat pedals and use regular shoes with a reasonably sturdy sole. Get a few weeks of riding under your belt and then re-visit the whole clipless pedal debate then...
