Framesaver, Boeshield et. al.: when to apply?

I'm about to get a used (1990s?) steel frame which I'm going to build up into an all-weather commuter. I'm thinking about treating it with Framesaver or Boeshield, but is it too late to do so - i.e. is this something that has to be done when the frame is new?

It's not too late to coat your frame. Just inspect it first to make sure there is no lethal rust anywhere which would make coating pointless. Framesaver will be far more durable than Boeshield. Another option is boiled linseed oil which is just as durable as Framesaver but a little more difficult and messier to apply.
