The 'Will Crud Roadracers fit my bike?' thread

Seeing as it's about that time of year when people start fitting mudguards, there will inevitably be half a dozen threads a day asking if Cruds will fit their bike/tyre combination. Thought it might be a good idea to compile a list of which are known to work and which don't.

Please post the make/model of bike and tyres (remember to include tyre width!). If 'some modification required' appears next to the bike name, it generally means people have had to chop bits off/mold the guards to get them to fit; this often seems to be the case with the rear guard on smaller frame sizes. I'll try to keep a list going in this post:

If its any help (probably not given different bikes and tyres and pretty much everything!) i managed to fit some to my cube agree gtc, the front was a bit tricky and every now and then it slightly rubs the tyre but all in all pretty good!

  • As long as your bike has front forks, rear seatstays, and runs 25c tyres or thinner, they will fit! A bit of fettling may be required, but they will fit.....

I'll give you two frames that won't take cruds, a Focus Izalco and a Look 585 and I'd guess that there's plenty more too.

 Did you even read my post? The idea is to compile a list of tried and tested frame/tyre combinations in the first post so that people don't have to go searching through 18 pages of discussion or start a new thread every time.

Thanks smidsy, glad someone's got the right idea! Which brand/model of tyre have you tried?

Had Gatorskins, Vittoria Evo Corse CX and Schwalbe Durano S - all 25mm and all fit.
    Yellow is the new Black.
  • just fitted a set on a forme axe edge.rs10 shimano wheels and the standard 23mm tyres that come with them.had to fettle a wee bit with them with a heat gun just to mould them a bit to where I wanted them but alls good and no rubbing at the minute.

You'd probably need to include make and model of brakes as well for this to be worthwhile as they impact on clearance as well.

Ribble Gran Fondo with Campag skeleton double front, single pivot rear brakes, 23mm tyres - just. 25mm tyres - not a chance!

Focus Cayo. Could get them on but the front squeaked like mad due it being a bit to close.
    Rear was fine though.

  • 2012 Giant Defy 2

Conti Gatorskin 25mm: Crud RR MkII won't fit. You can get them on but there is a lot of rubbing from the off making them pretty much unusable.

    Conti Gatorskin 23mm: Fit perfectly.

Also worth noting that on the rear guard, i had to hacksaw about an inch off the bottom to make it fit around the bottom bracket area. From what i've read it's reasonably common to have to do something like that on the rear guard.

    Jamis Ventura

Michelin Lithion 2 23mm or Vittoria Zafiro 23mm

No go - not enough clearnace under rear brake bridge.
  • Canyon Al - Fit ok but toe overlap on a large caused me to snap the front pretty quickly. Rear is fine though.

Fitted a pair to my B'Twin FC5, running on 23mm Schwalbe Blizzard Sport tyres. Plenty of fiddling about with the front one to make sure it doesn't rub but got there in the end. No problems with them at all.
  • Planet X pro carbon small frame, with Sram Apex brakes and 23mm GP4000s tyres.

Had to chop the rear guard a fair bit and as a result the rear guard sits further forward on the wheel so I needed to extend the rear with a flap to make things less unpleasant for my club mates! But they do basically fit, a bit of rubbing from time to time as they move around a little, but nothing too bad.

Had them fitted to my Giant defy 1, 2010 model, using 23 /25 mm tyres. Now moved them onto my winter hack, an old 1990 Giant, steel frame. Using 28mm tyres.

Methinks they can be adjsuted and messed with to fit most options.

Yep - I'm pretty sure based on a sample set of two you are safe to extrapolate to most bikes built in the last quarter century!

Hold on until i pick up the toys you threw out of your parm mate.
  • I've got them on my B'twin Triban 3 with 23mm continue Gatorskin Hardshells. I found the front of the front wheel guard was rubbing, so I've made some additional holes which I use additional fasteners to pull it up (attached to caliper).
  • Fit fine on my Bianchi Via Nirone (non carbon seatstays) with Conti Gatorskin 23c.

Are they really that dificult to fit on the Izalco? Ive got one, but having not tried fitting any cruds to them, I can't see anything that looks like it'll make it dificult.

Regarding the Izalco, I got one on the rear but there wasn't the clearance at the front and the fork edges are like blades which made it near-on impossible to attach the little bracket. Someone somewhere may have the patience and bodge it skills to get one to fit but I didn't.
