CS5 - Been There Yet?

Since my office move, I now have to travel up to Ladbroke Grove/Harrow Road area. Fine on a bike but I sometimes have to drive and I go from New Cross via Camberwell to Victoria to miss paying Congestion Charge. This is the same route as the new CS5 is going to be & I have to say that I am seriously unimpressed, particularly at the New Cross end where there are a number of pinchpoints which force cycle and vehicular traffic to merge. Peckham High Street has seen an extra lane westbound put in at Peckham Hill St as well as the cycle lane, which then immediately pinches down to only 1 shared lane because of the pedestrian traffic lights at the end of Rye Lane.

On the way back there are some not very nice junctions, such as under the bridge at Vauxhall that will need to be traversed as well as some other pinch points. I've seen a tiny bit of widening going on but we're talking 1/2 meter maximum in some places. I think the whole thing is completely half-arsed, not thought out properly and unlikely to be a net contributor to cycle safety.

Besides, not that much cycle traffic on that route compared to the ones coming direct into town, so is it worth it?

TfL's cycling policy, in a nutshell.

Not impressed that I'll be able to hear the works as they put it in. That count?
What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?

Surely just painting a bit of the road blue isn't that noisy.

It's better than it was - the lanes they have put in are wider than the green paths that wee there before, and the road surface has been improved. As good as it could be? Probably not. Peckham to Vauxhall doesn't seem that dangerous to me during rush hour except for other cyclists :P

The one bit that will need sorting, and that I'd rather they'd have spent the money on than the forthcoming blue paint is on Vauxhall cross. The southbound shared tunnel path needs a better route to rejoin the road - as it is it's not worth using. The northbound one is ok in principle, but as it's shared with pedestrians can get a bit hairy. Using the other exits to Clapham and Battersea seem like a milder version of the Swiss Cottage/Finchley road death dive, so I avoid them whenever I can.

They did CS7, including a full resurface of the road in about 2 evenings.
That was the most impressive thing about it.

And by the state of the stretch over C Common, it was a rushed job.

Assuming its got to be melted before it's laid (thermoplastic or similar), the burners are quite noisy.

Rode back along the Wandsworth end of CS8 last night in a vain attempt to get out of the wind, and that is already falling apart as well. Clearly the blue paint is not designed to last more than a year or so.

Very. The blue tarmac stuff is better but the painted bits are fairly unpleasant in the wet.
    RIP commute...
