Thanks for the advice - I e-mailed SRAM UK and they did warranty it -

I got my money back from the LBS.

A lot of people won't bother and just get a new one so bet there laughing all the way to the bank.

Companies use PF bottom brackets as it is a cost saving when manufacturing the frame.
