Right size Shimano MTB shoes

Hiya,
I am looking at getting some new MTB shoes.
I have found a good deal on some Shimano shoes via an on-line store.
I know when goggling about that with Shimano you sometimes have to go up a size or two compare with non-cycling shoes.
I normally take a size 8.5 non-cycling shoe. I have a great fitting pair of Bontrager Road shoes and they are size 43.
Ideally I would try some in a LBS - but this is not an option here.
So what is the best size to get? Size 43 or even 44??
Cheers

I wear the same size normal and cycling shoes which are Shimano.
The trouble with Shimano is they used to be made with a narrow last so they didn't fit British feet very well which are slightly wider. Also the UK sizes don't quite align with euro sizing. So people used to compensate by going up a size, which isn't the correct thing to do. Shimano's new last is now a bit wider and they also do some of their shoes in an extra wide last too.
I'd have a look on CRC or Wiggle and get a couple sizes they have free returns so shouldn't be issue returning the size that doesn't fit.0 -
Thanks,
Yes, its was CRC I was looking at. So order a 43 & 44 is what you are saying - then return the one that does not fit??
Cheers
EDIT, ah thats blown it - 43's are now OOSCan I upgrade???0 -
It depends on the model. My Shimano downhill SPD's are a size smaller than my shimano xc shoes but they fit the same.
Go to a shop and try some on.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Yep, I've done this a few times when LBS is unable to get stock in for me to try.
Many online retailers offer free returns using Collect+ service, take a look here for the list of supported retailers.

I ordered a set of MW81s in the same size as my airwalk and diadora spds and they are a size too small size 41 so ordered the 42 today0

Best to order a couple of pairs and keep one. If you can return the other via Collect+ you will save on postage compared to the Royal Mail0 -
I wear a 45 in both of my Shimano SPD shoes M077 and AM45 and my normal shoe size is 43 (9).
I have recently bought Specialized Defrosters for the winter and they are also a 45 but are a bit wider on the toes than the M077.
Saying that the AM45's are quite spacious but very heavy for longer rides so i haven't used them much this year..0 -
Thanks all,
Well I wanted some leisure/trainer type shoes with SPD, so after reading the replies here, and contacting Wiggle and CRC, I ended up ordering the MT43 shoes from CRC as they are on offer at the mo. Only had a 44 near my size, so plumped for them.
Will obviously return them for free if too loose, or maybe get some inserts if they are close'ish.
Did try ringing around LBS's but not many in my vicinity sell shoes - They could order them in, but that's a little pointless if CRC have them on a significant discount with free returns.

The MO88 is available in normal and wide versions. I take a 45 trainer and bought the wide version which comes up true to size.

The normal version is narrow. Shimano aren't idiots they show the Japanese sizing system which is in cm.
Only daft Americans, British and Europeans get confused.

OK folks - just a quick update - for those who are looking for Shimano shoes.
Here are the scores on the door for these MTB/Leisure shoes - with regards to sizing
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-mt43-mtb-spd-shoes-2013/rp-prod70096
I am, as I say above, between 8 (wide) to 9 UK - nominally 8.5, for normal non-cycling shoes
I was not able to order both the 43 and the 44 from Chain Reactions to compare the two, as the 43s went OOS just before I ordered.
The 44's arrived today, and have to say for the £37.79 outlay I am more than happy.
I also have Quidco tracking at 63p, so £37.16 in total, which is ~47% off the RRP.
Haven't tried on the bike yet, but with regards the fit I would say they are maybe 1/2 a size too large.
for me 43.5 would have been spot on, but as these aren't available in 1/2 sizes, a size 44 is the best option for me. I am sure a 43 would have been too small length and width wise.
The slight sloppiness on initial fit was easily cured with a slim insole placed below the Shimano one.
There is enough slack in the lacing and velco strap to get a good tight fit without it being uncomfortable.
Personally I would recommend people get at least 1 size larger they normally take for non-cycling shoes. I know Shimano offer some shoes in wide fittings (and 1/2 size increment), so I would say a minimum of 1/2 size larger if the shoes are a wide fitting, which these aren't.
This is just my point of view, and YMMV.
Cheers
