Shimano 105 front hub

Hi,

I'm just about to put a new rim on an old Shimano 105 HB-5501 front hub and looking at the hub specs (http://www.shimano.com/publish/content/ ... le.html/07)%20Hub%20Specs.pdf) I can see the hub has an offset, I.e., the flange to centre is different each side.

Any idea why Shimano has done this on a front hub and anything I need to be aware of?

I couldn't get your link to work, but I found this:

Which does not show an offset. AFAIK a non disc front hub should not be offset, perhaps someone can enlighten me if otherwise. You could always get your calipers out and measure the existing hub if unsure.

The link has been split. If you combine the link and the subsequent text up to ...pdf you get the correct link. It does indeed show the HB5501 front hub to have an offset. I think it must be a typo as all the other no-disc front hubs in the list have symetrical flanges. I guess it is a typo and why most wheel builders recommend measuring the hub yourself rather than relying on printed material that may be incorrect.

As an aside, anyone know the difference between a HD5500 and a HB5501?

From memory it was only the colours that changed. 5500 was silver then 5501 was available in either silver or black. The axle is the same and the cones are the same shape but with a slightly different finish between models.

The relevant information is:
Model HB-5501
center to flange (l) 37.0mm
Center to Flange (R) 35.5mm

My measurement of flange to flange is 71mm, giving a centre to flange of 35.5mm. I can't see how there could be an offset on a front hub!
