Bought a Giant Defy Composite frame off here last week for a mate of mine who has got back into cycling but is using some hideous thing from the 80's with downtube shifters!

So he deserves something a bit better and hopefully this is it; 105 groupset on offer from Merlin, finishing kit and crankset kindly left on by seller, and a donation of my old Rolf Sestriere wheels.

Comes in at 8.15kg without pedals in a Large.

As new, total build cost (excluding my wheels and tyres), 700 quid.

    Well, that's at his house.

He bought it in a kind of car boot sale - Decathlon organise them here in France; you bring your old stuff into the shop, set a price, and then people come in one weekend and (hopefully) buy it.

I think he paid 150 Euros for it, so pretty good for that price. I can't remember what make it is. I think it's 7 or 8 speed.

I'll try and get a piccie. Wanna buy it?! Maybe it's some ex-pro Italian exotica worth thousands?!

If he is your friend tell him not to sell the 80s bike!

Why? What else should he do with it? Frame it and put it on the wall?!

Ride it, much better than the Giant.

I hope that's a joke! Not only is it like 50% heavier, but since when was it a good idea to reach down to the downtube to change gear?! (And then trim that gear change a bit so it doesn't rattle...)

I know Smidsy - don't take advantage of him, he's really more like Jar Jar Binks. Nice build by the way.

Seriously: its much better than the Giant. If anything the Giant has 105....................

Tell him to keep it - it rocks. Get some cool retro kit - that thing is smart.

I believe that the drug taker Dopestrong retained the down tube shifter on his mountain stage bikes, so they can't be that bad ...............

    That thing is cool.

  • Great build Bernie, you've done your mate a great favour. The other bike only looks good because it's in celeste, I mean what's going on with the seat? It looks like something you'd see in an open crotch shot in a 70's porn mag

  • Nah - its the celeste with black rims, black stem and its well smart.

Saddle has one of those jiffy saddle covers - meant to be a gel cover but its like a huge sock that you pull over it and it just sits there all baggy chaffing away at your gooch.

Put some black handlebar tape on, new cool race saddle, decent brake blocks and tyres and it'll rock.
  • So any takers of this fine piece of cycling history? £150?

(All steel guaranteed, no alloy or carbon here!)
  • If you were down the road I'd give ya£30 for it but as you are miles away then no thanks.

Tell him to keep it and burn all the locals off on it.
