The inbuilt radio/cd player has died in my car. It's part of the fascia so the unit can't be removed. Any suggestions for a decent docking station I can run off the cigarette lighter socket?

  • No chance it's just a fuse that's blown? There will be more than one fuse in the power feed to the stereo. If you give the make & model of car it might be easier to advise. Ipod docking stations are universally poor in my experience. The only way to get decent sound quality is to run them through a decent system. A docking station isn't going to run sound to your speakers so the sound will probably be awful in a car.

Thanks for that. A small child managed to insert a pound token into the cd player in a Honda Jazz and I suspect the token is across some electrics as the radio/clock/interior lights/central locking are inoperative. An auto electrician said there was an underbonnet fuse blowing and a tester showed a short but he couldn't get at the radio. The dealer will isolate the radio to chase the fault so I suspect the radio won't be working again.

  • Doesn't sound like a very competent auto electrician to be honest. Integrated stereos are just units hidden behind the facia but the stereo is still a unit which can be removed and replaced. They have to be - no dealer is going to replace the whole dash in a car just because the stereo stops working while the car is under warranty.

There are a number of videos on t'interweb showing how to take out the stereo depending what model you have.

Try giving a decent car audio shop a call if you have any local. They will have all the tools required to take off the trim and might well manage to get the coin out & the stereo working.
