SKS cracked rear mudguard - Repair
Anyone else on here got suggestions for repairing the above? FWIW my current solution is as follows.
My rear SKS mudguard cracked (all the way across at the seat stay "brake bridge" where the rear clamp is fitted) after about 12,000+ miles of riding and commuting - by no means an unusual problem according to Google searches.
Not a bad record given the mileage you might say but I am baffled why this problem should continue to occur and why SKS haven't come up with a fix or work around. Every other part of the mudguard set is still almost like new and SKS sell spares for everything except the 'guards themselves!
My winter bike is a Giant SCR aluminium frame with a small rear triangle - so has little "give" - no doubt all the vibration is transmitted to the rear guard on every road imperfection - especially at the bridge.
Rather than invest in a new mudguard (adopted Yorkshire cheapskate) I have fashioned a (probably temporary) repair as follows:
My theory is that the tyre section will both hold the guard together and act as a damper (and anti rattle device) against future vibration and possible failure - but why don't SKS just offer a flexible (rubber?) clamp?

-
Removed the mudguard seat stay brake bridge clamp
Cut approx 2 inches out of a very worn gator skin tyre
Cut the beading off both sides of the tyre
Super glued the 2 inch section of tyre to join the outside two halves of the mudguard - whilst holding them in place
Refitted the bridge clamp
