Well I took a punt on cheapo ebay carbon handlebars from a brand I'd never heard of and they've been superb. I bought GD Racing MARBLE CARBON 680mm Flat Handlebars for my 29er MTB and have used them for a year no problem. They cost about £49 and when they arrived they seemed really nicely made and weighed only 120g - a bargain as far as I can see. Don't forget most of the brand name stuff is made in China too:

Not even an introduction for your very first post, resurrecting a thread well over a year old ? What's your Chinese name Duncan? ;)

Was just thinking the same thing :)
  • Not road, but I just replaced my Giant Trance X 0 aluminum bars with $15 carbon. I went from 740mm wide to 640mm wide. The weight loss was about 140 grams. They are incredibly stiff.

I didn't do it for the weight loss though. I wanted my bars more narrow and $15 for new carbon bars of the length I wanted sounded a lot better than irreversibly cutting the factory-original bars that came with my bike.

    I used a torque wrench with 4-NM.

The issue is there are reputable sellers and rubbish like the Alibaba fakes.
If you go to someone like Hong Fu then happy days, they know what they're doing. Buying some fake 3t bars off Alibaba id suggest is best avoided.

I know I've broken two alloy seat posts that were brand names - no injuries thank god and they got replaced.
Mate had a no name cf seatpost and that did break. Again luckily no injury but no comeback on eBay either.

I'm happy with branded alloy for the bars and named cf for seatposts. I don't see the benefits of cheap cf against the risks.

Thanks for the advice chaps albeit I'm not after weight saving if honest!
I'd like to hear if anybody has had "Fail" with these items?
I'm tempted by the cost being 2/3s cheaper!!

I bought some 5 years ago Merek, after a year i 'accidentally' overtightened and they crimped a bit, been riding them ever since, still as stiff as ever, crack not got any bigger, will replace eventually but still very happy with the feel and performance of them

tru, in a moment of madness i bought an FSA seatpost of eBay thinking it was a genuine secondhand one, turns out it was a piece of cr@p with FSA logos on, didn't last 5 mins :? Fool me once!
