Would you recommend this for winter?

I need a winter bike to do some light work about 2 x 30 miles per week, purely do this for fitness as I am 53 years old.
I use a Scott CR1 Pro for sunny days.
I only want to spend about £500 so was thinking about a second hand one.
However I noticed a Boardman CX for £540 at Halfords, would you recommend this or buying a used bike.
does this take mudguards?

I've had one for a month. They are excellent.
Don't forget to quidco it for 3% off and use your British cycling membership for another 10% off. This weekend they have 10% off as well and yes these offers can be permed. Should get you down to less than 500...0
