Rear caliper brakes don't clear frame

I'm putting together a new bike for my wife and have bought an older Shimano 105 group set from ebay... It came off an old steel frame bike. On attaching the rear brake I find that it doesn't clear the frame (I.e when not cabled/tensioned it touches the frame) it needs an extra 5mm or so - would I be OK to use spacer washers to get it in the right place? Or do the brakes just not fit the frame?

So when it's got a cable in it it doesn't touch the frame?

    Put a cable in it!

All my frames have been like that AFAICR.

  • Thanks DesWeller...! I've cabled it and all's fine - on my other 2 bikes there's clearance when not cabled which is why I was perturbed but all's well now that it's all cabled up!
