I have Ultegra 6700ss 10 speed cassette
12-28 cassette.....50/34 crankset

wishing to grannyfy it to maybe :
11-30
12-30
12-32??

Someone suggested Shimano Deore mtb 10 speed? ?

Is it really just plug and play? ( straight swap)
Will it require med cage or long cage?
Longer chain?

please help?

Jonny :D

Your mech has a total capacity of 33 with a max 28 tooth according to shimano

In practice you should be OK with a 30 tooth if your chain is long enough and B screw is set right

  • Did this a few months ago as I live in mountainous Portugal. I had to swap out the cassette, I've gone to a 12-34, a new MTB rear mech, for some reason that I can't remember I've gone with a 9speed shimano LX rear mech although a 10sp cassette, a new chain and a new gear cable. I followed the advice on the workshop section of the CTC forum, that was where I got the advice to use a 9sp rear mech rather than a 10sp. It works fine, a bit of a hassle to do.

As above, 9sp shimano mtb rear mechs work with 10sp road shifters but they changed the pull ratio with the 10 speed mtb groups. So until recently if you wanted to use anything as big as a 32t shimano you'd have to use a mtb rear mech (9sp). I think but am not sure that even the long cage road rear mechs weren't able to go to 32t according to official instructions.

Things have changed though, the new ultegra 6800 long cage rear will go to 32t and I pressume the new dura ace and 105 long cage as well so no need for a mtb mech.

    12-32 probably long cage(any shimano 9s MTB RDer)...since they make a 12-30/10s for the road..plug and play.
  • Thanks guys for the info....will stick a 12-30 on with some extra links and set the 'b' right....
Planet X selling 12-30 cassettes for 39 quid!!!! wow :D xmas come early lol

MTB 10spd cassettes don't need the spacer on the hub like the 10spd road cassettes (except tiagra).

I've just swopped my Tiagra 4600 12-28T cassette for a 12-30T. I'm using an Ultegra RD6700 Short cage derailleur which is engraved 30T on the outer cage adjacent the top guide pulley wheel.
