Bonjour All, 8)

Can somebody please recomend the Best Rear Car Cycle Carrier Please? I have been looking at a few and am a bit unsure to be honest,

I have narrowed it down and i am looking at going for the Peruzzo Verona! :D

Has anyone got one of these? What is it like?

I hope somebody can give me some advice please? :D

Cheers to You All Fellow Cyclists!! :D

  • in my view, the best rear carrier is a towball mount with lighboard. I've only used Thule and some other that I hated and have forgotten the name of.

  • Why do you need "the best"? Most of them will do a perfectly good job. Mine was £60 from Halfords in a sale a few years ago. It's solidly built, almost infinitely adjustable and supposedly fits almost any hatchback, holds three bikes, takes a while to fit and secure, is not the least bit gimmicky - in short is absolutely adequate.

Make sure you check that whatever you are buying it will fit your car. For instance, I own a Mk2 facelift model, Ford Focus, and you cannot buy a rear carrier for it. You have to get a rooftop.

Strap on rear carriers are really good for damaging your cars paintwork, the nylon straps expand when wet and slacken the fit and their universal nature means the don't really fit anything. A tow ball mounted or roof mounted will always be a better option IMHO.
  • Hi Guys, Cheers for advice,

I have narrowed it down to the Peruzzo Verona or there is also a Cracking looking Rear High Mount 3 Cycle Carrier in Halfords which has got Great Reviews too, 8)

Any more tips be much appreciated,

    Cheers

I've got the £180 Halfords towbar-mounted 4-bike rack, and I can't fault it - solid as a rock, and has happily transported £10,000-worth of bike on the back of a £200 car down to the Alps and back. Anything sticking outside the profile of the car (roof rack, etc.) will dramatically reduce fuel consumption, especially critical on long journeys, and you won't get stung by ferries for being over height, or for towing a trailer.
  • Saris Bones 2 or 3 fits most cars but you need to learn the setup tricks; once you have it's solid as a rock.

Winter - Boardman CX Team (Rival X1 Hyd)

+1 For a Saris Bones, they fit a Focus too.

I also put a great big dent in the boot of a Renault scenic. The rack was as solid as a rock though.
If carrying only one bike I used to put the wheels in the car, this solved all problems of obscuring the lights.
  • Modern cars are rubbish for this - the panels are so soft that many can't take rear cycle carriers. Halfords (I think) have lists of models that you can't put rear carriers on. We have a Ford Mondeo and an Audi A1 and can't put a bike rack on either. :( We got the cars before I got into cycling - when we change one I'll pay attention to the cycle carrier issue! Our only real option currently is a towball mount (expensive as we don't have a towball currently) as I don't think I'd be able to get my bike up onto a roof mount!

Fortunately I can sling my bike whole in the back of the Mondy (with the seats down), or it fits in the footwells behind the front seats with the wheels off.

I've got the Atera Strada DL top recommendation on the first of those links.
An excellent bit of kit. I can't recommend it highly enough. Simple and secure fitting to towball.
Bikes attach in seconds very securely.
The whole thing slides away from the rear of the car without taking bikes off if you need to open your tailgate for any reason.... like at Calais on Tuesday when customs wanted a peek in the back.
Well constructed and no damage to bikes or car.

Another one for the Saris Bones - haven't found a vehicle it doesn't fit yet...
  • Halfords cycle carrier caused damage to my car.

I would strongly advise against using a Halfords bike carrier. I bought a Halfords carrier and used it for a single bike. Despite being fitted securely and correctly, it caused significant damage to my car. Firstly the "Foot points" stripped the paint from the boot of the car. Secondly the rubber caused indentations on the top of the bought.

Halfords confirmed that the carrier was fitted correctly but have attempted to place the blame with me, explaining that the carrier must not have been fastened firmly enough.

As This damage has caused approx €600 worth of damage to my car. I visited 2 repuptable bodyshops who confirmed that the carrier had damaged the car.

+1 for the Atera Strada DL - expensive but solid as a rock and extremely easy to fit and take off.

Looks like it'll take 80kg from this http://www.practicalcaravan.com/forum/t ... hdi-110bhp - that should be enough, unless you're going to load up with 4 bikes over 15kg each.

My Clio is rated just 56kg for nose weight, and it doesn't flinch with four road bikes hanging off the back, and there is the added amusement of seeing £10,000-worth of bikes hanging off a £200 car.

I bought a Focus ST estate to cart the bikes around. Cant fit a tow bar due to centre exit exhaust, so i bought a set of roof bars. Not to put the bikes on, to fit a roof top box to.

I dont own £6k worth of clothes so all that stuff will go in the box, the bikes go in the car.
My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...

Saris Gran Fondo. No light board needed!
