I had to replace the left shifter on my 5600 groupset a few weeks ago and bought the new 5700 ones.

Very nice upgrade to offset the cost: the looks of my Acciaio transformed by the cable routing under the bar tape, improved ergos and I'm sure they are lighter (although I didn't check this before dumping the old ones).

I searched around various places on the web (including here) and opinions seem to vary on compatibility so I thought I'd jot down what I found:

1. Despite some things I've read the 5600 front mech works absolutely fine with them. Chainset and cassette also exactly as before.

2. The 5600 brakes do work with them, but not that well, requiring too much to stop when riding on the hoods around town for my liking. I fitted 5700 brakes today and all good, probably slightly better than the 5600 combination.

Big discount on the brakes on Wiggle at the moment and I fitted the old ones to my kid's Langster as a significant upgrade to the Tektros. So no real cost, if you say it quickly.
