What type of shifter?

my mate has a lovely old Scott Tampica. 3x8 Shimano shifters. The left hand front shifter is broken and his LBS say it is not made anymore. Is it possible to use a different shift lever to replace or does it have to be the same type? am i being a numpty or will any shifter do the job? would be much easier picking up something new and cheap than trawling ebay for the same part.
cheers.

Yes, any shimano tripple left/front shifter will do. Have a trawl through the classifieds secftion on here and you can typically pick up something decent (like Deore) for £10 or so.0

Any left hand shimano will do or just £8.99 gets you this which is of the same era as the Scott
