I have posted a while ago and kindly received some very good advice and I am now at the stage where I want to buy the new parts and have a shopping list.

My chain/cassette and certain chain rings do need replacing, they look worn and a couple of bicycle shops have pointed this out to me. I am on a budget but would like to get light and high quality components.

The technical side of bicycles and cycle specs is rather new to me but what I do know is that my cycle has been through several changes especially in terms of the frame which is now a size 'L' Defy 0 with team rabobank livery. However, its component parts are taken from a humble Giant FCR 3 circa 2009. The spec for which is here:

These are the parts I was thinking of buying as replacements:

Chain: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kmc-x8-99-8-speed-chain/

Cassete: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/sram-pg850-8-speed-cassette/

I am not sure about the chainring replacement as the best advice seems to be to buy a new 8-speed square taper chainset. So if I replace the chainset, would this Shimano alivio be OK? The description suggests that is intended for MTBs which makes me wonder?

I note with chainsets that there are many variables involved such as bolt circle, length, and teeth, any thoughts about avoiding purchase mistakes would be appreciated.

Many thanks!

  • I am a bit concerned as I notice when browsing online that almost all square taper chainsets appear to be discontinued, why is that?
