Factors affecting disc size fitment?

Newbie question alert.

Aside from actual braking requirements, what is it that determines the size of rotor you fit - the forks, the callipers, both, neither?

    the max size the fork/frame maker says. and in the case of the frame the chain/seat stay clearance.

    read the topic in the faqs about disc brake fitment.
