I have just bought a scott speedster s40 as a winter bike. Comes with a tiagra setup but rear deraiileur is 105. Cassette is 12-25 with compact crank. Although I will be losing serious man-points, I need to get either a 12-28 or 11-28 for some hill training. How do I know the limitation of the RD and whether a new cassette will work ok?

thanks

IIRC all current and recent versions of 105 will cope with a 28t cassette.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.

any more thoughts on this? I am read that 9 speed 105 RD can officially manage 27t and unofficially handle 28t.

Is it new 105 5700? I can confirm that 5700 will work with an 11-28 as I've currently got that on my winter bike.

If it's an older model then check the archive on the shimano website for the original 'tech docs', they should tell you the total capacity of the mech along with the maximum sprocket size it can accommodate it.
  • As above, 11-28 will work fine.

IMO 12-27 gives a better spread of ratios combined with a 53-39 and is enough for most UK hills.

I have 12-30 and very rarely use the first three gears, so for most people 11-28 is a good choice.
  • It'll be 5700 as that's been out for aaages!

In any case I have 12-30 on my 105 rear mech.

hi, no it's a shimano 105 5500 9 speed dérailleur. currently use 12-25 compact but doing a fair bit of hill training and struggling up some parts of Caerphilly mountain (missing the 28t on my old bike!)

Ideally want 11-28 or 12-28 if they do it otherwise will settle for tiagra 12-27 cassette just want to make sure my RD can handle the 28 option first.

    thanks
  • I have stuck a 5700 11-28 on the same set up, Merlin were doing the cassette this week for £21 delivered which i thought was a bargain!

that's good. I used to have a giant tcr which had the 105 5700 and 11-28 as standard. Just hope the 5500 has the same capability.

Just read properly and i see you want 9 speed whereas the one i changed was a 10 speed cassette, must learn to read properly!
