Garmin Edge

Hey all,
Excuse my ignorance but I'm looking into an Edge computer (probably the 510) but I was wondering whether, to get full functionality, does the edge unit have to sync with your mobile in order to work?
I'm looking at the edge for the obligatory strava recording-type info, and am finding that my phone in my back pocket doesn't always record info, plus it gets a little.... Sweaty.
Outside tools for outside jobs, etc, but seems kinda pointless if I still need to have my phone doing its thing to work.
Ta.

No, the 510 doesn't need to be sync'd to you smart phone to work. You will get all the normal functions of speed, distance, route travelled, HR and cadence (with HRM and cadence sensor) etc from the unit working on it's own.
You only need your smart phone connection, I believe, for the weather, live tracking and wireless download functions. If you don't want these functions anyway it might be worth looking at a 500 as there are some good deals around, especially the bundle deals with HRM and cadence sensors.
I've got the 500 and it does everything I need.Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarves are not happy.0 -
Lovely. Thanks City Boy ;-)0

For phones look at something like http://www.pocketpouch.co.uk/
Similar things are often freebies with mags. Two this year IIRC.

Phones are for phone calls and messaging. Put it in the jersey pocket and forget it until you need it in an emergency. For data recording get a proper device. Any Garmin Edge 500/510 705/800/810 device can upload it's data to Strava once you get home.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

I think the OP is planning to do just that - use a proper GPS. The phone allows weather updates etc, and allows the tracking which is nice if out for a solo ride.Giant Defy 2

If you want to avoid your phone getting sweaty - get a pOcpac. They're great. See website here: http://www.thepocpac.co.uk/product-cate ... ile-ipacs/
Also FWIW I have an Edge 500 and I don't think the 'benfits' of a 510 outweigh the price difference.0 -
I also use a 500 and it works very well in ride and uploading to strava.0

From what I've read online the 510 apparently has better satellite location and menus. Also the colour screens are a fairly unimportant, but nice plus too. The general consensus is that if you've got a 500 there's no point upgrading to the 510 as there is not that much difference, and I don't need the navigational side of the 800/810.
Therefore, as I'm new to them, I'm thinking the 510 is the best option.
Cheers everyone.0 -

Worth a look here. They're usually one of the cheapest with pretty good customer service and deliveries:
