First ladies mountain bike with a small £300-ish budget.

I would like to buy a first ladies mountain bike for my girlfriend. I have no idea what to look for as I have no experience with bikes in general. She is 5”6 with a medium build. She will be using it for roads, park trails, country lanes and wooded areas nothing real hardcore. I only have a budget of around £300 so I don’t expect anything outstanding. I’d just like something durable, comfortable and suitable for the terrain she intends to use it for.
Could someone with experience get me started on what to look out for or what to avoid. She’ll be going to a few bike shops to try some out. I’d just like a little knowledge on what I’m looking for. Any recommendations would be great also. I don’t mind going second hand if it means getting more quality for my pound so that is an option too.

Buy second hand. At her height I would guess a mens medium sized is also in the mix too, which also opens up more options.
You'll get more for your money on Ebay etc, and if she doesn't like it and you need to sell the bike then you stand to make back what you paid. If you try to sell a nearly new entry-level female specific bike you'll get next to nothing...
Nice light hardtail with good components will be perfectLife is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away....
