PMs stuck in outbox

Hi, have been trying to send PMs to a user selling a jacket this morning and the messages are gettng stuck in the outbox. Am afraid that I will lose the purchase because I can't PM the guy. Any advice?

    As I understand how phpBB works, messages remain in your outbox until the other person has read them.

    It doesn't work like emails where the message has to be physically transferred to different computer systems, as we're all accessing the same database, you effectively put your message into the database, and the other person reads that same database entry.
