Hi all

Im newish to the road bike scene,as still am and been mountain biking for the last 20 years, i do all my own spannering........but road shifters seem a tad more copmplicated.....

I purchased a Merida 900 race lite, running a Shimano sora 2300 8 speed shifters. Ive purchased and fitted 9 speed cassette and a rear 9 spead ultrego mech.

8 speed cassette was 12-25, with me hating hills and recently moving from a flat area up into peak district area, i purchased 9 speed cassette 11-28, but only using 12-28......28 what a god send.....

Im looking at a replacment rear shifter or pair of shifters, what are your recommendations and why for either replacing pair or just one shifter...

I always ride on own (and strava) doing 15 - 40 miles twice a week, not really looking for massive weight savings..

look forward to replies.........

could have just bought a 28T 8 speed cassette and saved the extra outlay? I would a second hand tiagra 9 speed shifter if it was my current bike. Only a carrea tdf, so wouldn't be too fussed about them matching.

just for the avoidance of doubt, are you saying you're currently running a 9 speed cassette with 8 speed shifters, and as a consequence not using the smallest sprocket? Is the shifting OK?

If it was me I too would be looking for a used pair of 9 speed Shimano shifters off Ebay or the classifieds on here

(OCD wouldn't let me replace just one shifter)

In fact I just bought and fitted a whole 9 speed Tiagra groupset from a fellow forumite. Well pleased!

yes shifting is OK but not butter smooth no matter what adjustments i make, i was hoping shifter mechanisms where same on 8 and nine.......

Anyway for the sake of another £20 i purchased and fitted a 11-28 8 speed cassette....just the job.i was going to replace shifters but after reading up really cant be bothered upgrading all....perhaps a spring upgrade project.

    thanks for info.......
