Ok, I've managed to destroy my Magicshine MJ-818 in a moment of stupidity - which is a shame because I liked the fact that it was visible from outer space. There seems to be many options for a replacement front light (solar storm, fluxient etc) - but no one seems to be making rear lights of that type?

Before I go and order a replacement, does anyone have any recommendations?

ta
cheers

  • You could try a Volt from Cateye. I've got one at the moment and it projects a great spot onto the road behind

Here's a photo I took for someone else, didn't have the light angled down as much as normal here so the spot can be even more noticable:

The USB recharge is handy as I just plug it into my laptop at work and it's done by the end of the day.

To be fair any rear light with a 0.5W LED is going to be bright enough for you to be seen. Some of the new rear light a a bit too bright. IT only has to be bright enough for you to be seen. Any driver that cannot see you with a 0.5W LED is going to crash long before they get near you.

Cateye Rapid 5 is about a bright as anyone needs. The new Volt is too bright and is brighter than car rear lights. Do you have trouble seeing cars at night when driving?

I have a Rapid 5 on one bike and the Volt on the other. I agree the Rapid 5 is a fantastic light and if used the wrong way the new Volt is 'too' bright. I point mine down towards the road to avoid a direct beam at cars and to project a spot onto the road. I just feel a lot safer knowing there is a pool of light behind me that cannot be missed, even by a blindfolded Labrador.
  • Just got a Phaart Booster and Red Mist from Planet X:

    £1.49 and £1.99

The mounts seem a bit cheap, but solid enough. Otherwise they seem pretty good. Very bright.

Thought I should follow this up - I went for the Moon Shield 60, which I'm very impressed with

    - small, much smaller than I was expecting
    - very bright, I've had to point it down onto the road so as not to blind people behind me. It creates a big red pool of red light behind me
    - waterproof - it's had some good soakings in the last couple of weeks on a bike with no mudguards and doesn't seem to have suffered any affects.
    - I've no idea how long the battery lasts, it does 5X 1hr commutes on flashy mode and then gets recharged on a monday morning
    cheers

I've a smart 0.5W and the Smart lunar. Both good.

I'd never rely on just one rear light though - you cant tell quickly if it breaks or falls off. They're so cheap that everyone should go for two if you're out at night.

Moonshield 60 is great apart from the fact that the two warning lights (charging/low battery) in the casing are pointless as you can't see them when the light is on. As a result the first you find out the light needs charging is when it runs out.
  • Another shout for the Moon Shield paired with the Moon X300 on the front. Small, neat, rechargeable and bright. Nothing else to say.
