Brake width - Wider rims

Hi,

Have just bought some wider aero wheels for my bike, but have a question regarding brake set up.

The new rims are 27mm wide and with new recommended brake block theres very little (read: no) clearance between the blocks and the rims.

I have slackened the cable tension, and wound out the adjusting bolt on the top but still don't really have enough clearance.

Do I need to change the concave washers to narrower ones on order to make more space - it's the only way I can see to get more room!

Thanks,

RJA

bit radical, but file off/wear down some of the brake blocks?

Ha ha, this had crossed my mind as a last resort! I probably need 3-4mm total!

If you take the cable off the caliper would there be enough clearance?

Theres not enough room with everything maxed out, and cable not attached.

Thin pads, I do not know which to suggest though. I fear I will have the same issues with my 25mm rims and the brakes I have.

Or disc brakes but that means a new frame and fork. I think that will the new trend with disc, really wide rims.

I would love to get a new frameset to accomodate the wheels. Would probably mean new hub/wheels for disc brakes in anycase!

I've got no chance of getting a new bike past the Secretary of Finance!

Ever thought of a off balance purchase. I have three bikes my wife does not even know about!

  • If the rims are carbon then Mavic CXR carbon pads could be the answer. These are slightly shallower in depth than conventional pads.

speedy - The rims are carbon I'll have a look at the Mavic pads spec. Do you own them?
  • No I don't but I have worked with the cxr wheels and the relevant pads. The pads are slightly narrower dimensionally to compensate for the wider rim section.
