2003 Marin Rock Springs shock

Hi all
A bit of advise please as I am totally confused.com. I have a 2nd hand 2003 Marin Rock Springs, had it a while and just getting back in to MTBing, the rear shock needs to be replaced so was having a look around. The shock fitted is a Rockshox xc and has an eye to eye length of 185mm but the spec on the original 2003 Marin Rock Springs was 163mm has the original owner changed the shock or were they supplied with different lengths? Thanks in advance.

Originally was a Fox Float AFAIK, so possibly changed.
But specs vary.I don't do smileys.
