Wheels & Lateral Play

I fitted the new ultegra 6700 wheelset yesterday and took them out for their maiden voyage in today monsoon, I can not believe how much lateral play there is on these wheels, i've tried lots of different QR tension but they still move 5+ mm and rub like buggery against the pads.

Is it possible that these wheels are much weaker than the lower Shimano models?

Also I've checked all of my wheelsets (11 in total) and they all move to some degree or another when fitted, obviously the 32+ spoke wheels move less than the 20/16 spoke wheels but is that normal?

Back to the main point these new Shimano 6700 actually rub against the brake pads which none of my other wheels do, I do keep the pad to rim gap about 1-2mm

  • If they haven't tighten them, then yes...

your 5 mm play seems a bit of an exaggeration though...

  • Yes, the play you describe must be in the bearings.

admittedly i can sometimes be a tad prone to exaggerate but really these rock from side to side, i'm just surprised that factory new Shimano wheels have so much play???

I have no problem adjusting them i'm just a bit shocked if that is the case.

My new R501's seem to flex quite a bit. I noticed yesterday in the rain the gritty rims were catching the brake blocks when standing climbing. No side to side wobble when the QR is done up though, so I'm sure it's just flex.

You need to distinguish between flex and play. If there's a distinct knock either way when you grab the rim then the cones need adjusting. If it's just flex then get some different wheels, or live with it.
