Hi all

Looking for an all rounder to use as a winter road trainer, commuter and for off road/canal towpath blasting (might consider a dabble with cyclocross racing at some point too but no pro aspirations!). What are the best value bikes and deals for around £800-900?

Should ideally include:
- discs
- mudguard mounts
- bottle cage bosses
- compact chainset

Any recommendations much appreciated.

Using a focus Mares AX4 for much of the above and seen them around for £700. For 2014 the equivalent model is the AX5.0 which has much better spec. Think the genesis Cdf is in your price range as well

The new Canyon range looks interesting, slightly above your price range though.

    Planet X TOR
  • The new Giant looks good value, TRP brakes ETC.

If you're quick, Boardman CX Team 2012/2013 can be had for £675 with British Cycling Discount on top of current Halfords current discount (ends today) if Lrg or XLrg fits! Also 2012/2013 is 0.5kg lighter than newer 2014. £950 - 14 % = £810 - £60 (ends today) = £750 - 10% BC Discount = £675. :)

Still on the steel frame theme, the disc-braked Hi variant of Charge's Filter model can be had in the target price range if you shop around. Built with Tange Infinity double-butted tubing, comes with guards as standard, and a pannier rack is easily fitted if you need one.
