Powertap + Planet X Carbon Clinchers

So, I've managed to convince the Mrs that the one thing missing from our lives is a Powertap...

However, I've only got one pair of decent wheels, Planet X Carbon Clinchers - which for me bimbling around in the 4th Cats and dry Sunday rides, are perfect.

Problem is the Powertap is +100g heavier than the hub already in the clinchers.

Do I get the Powertap built into these wheels and live with them being a little heavier (am I likely to notice the + 100g), and use it on the turbo for winter or go looking for a specific training wheel to get it built into (although money is an object)

Any advice more than welcome.

Do you really need a powertap!?
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles
  • It won't make you slower... will it make you faster? If used properly it will... if it's just there to show you some number to upload on Strava, then it's a waste of money

I'd ideally like to stop bimbling around in the 4th cats, so want to spend the offseason training for next year.

Hoping that I can put it to good use, rather than parading numbers of Strava

As a 4th cat your own lack of physical ability (or inability to read a race, or poor cornering, or excess body fat, etc etc) is going to limit your performance than a few extra grams of metal in the centre of a wheel. I doubt you'll even notice the extra weight. If you were adding 100g to the rim, then you might feel a slight difference, but practically it wouldn't actually hamper your performance.

Ha Ha, harsh - but fair, my inability is the thing hampering my performance.

Not harsh, just honest. The same things limit me too, which is undoubtedly why I do quite badly in most races. Was just trying to point out the futility of worrying about the negligible effect of 100 hub-based grams when there are almost infinitely bigger things that will affect your performance.

  • You have to budget for new spokes as well... bladed spokes are expensive, looking at 50-60 pounds worth of spokes only... not that you have to have bladed spokes, but...

How about signing up to trainer road and doing a few power based turbo sessions, do your road sessions based on HR and RPE.
I used to own a powertap and this is what I do now...

Have signed up for Trainer Road, doing the SST Base Plan at the moment - felt that the power readings I'm getting aren't that accurate, that and I'm 40 soon - hence the big ask for an expensive cycling related present.
