Hi,

I've gotten into road cycling and my barely used mountain bike is taking up valuable space which is now required.

Album: http://imgur.com/a/ydH4P

It's a Trek 4900 disc edition from around 2003/4, and has pretty much seen about 100 miles max.

It's not in the greatest condition from being stored in a garage for so long and will probably need a full service, new chain, cassette maybe, and hydro disc service - the pictures would show it all.

How much do you think I would be able to get selling this in the classifieds? to see if it's worth it or to use it as a winter bike.

Cheers,
Arran

It's worth approximately bugger all. If someone offers a swap for a bag of haribo then take it.

    That bad? lol

Any basis on why you think so little?
  • Do an advanced search on ebay for Trek 4900 and include completed listings. It looks like you'll get about £100 for it.

It's a lot better then most entry level bikes. Doesn't need new parts, just clean, oil and service. Then ride.

    Like he says ^^^^^^

If only I could persuade my lads that secondhand is a good route, I'd take it from you for £100, buy a 14" inbred frame (£140), new stem, probably need a seat post and front mech. Would be a decent bike for £300 and much better than what you'd get new. With the new frame would look quite tidy too. Could add a secondhand Recon for not too much too.

The forks on it are dead, pretty bad rust at the top of the stanchion.

    That not rust, just dirt.

Forks seem to have a bit of a tidemark, losing oil?

It's not worth a lot sadly, it'll be a perfectly decent bike but it looks its age and that'll put people off. And the bolt-ons, mad stem, toeclips etc are not helping that. So it'll be hard to get a price that really reflects the fact that it should make someone very happy.

    Good luck!

Looks like it could be a nice bike for somebody. My advice is stick it on eBay where it will probably make more then it retailed new!
  • Seen a lot worse for a lot more money

It will make between £90 and £140 on Ebay, depending on where the seller is based.

If the seller is close enough to me.....

...and I was looking too build up a bike for my wife (which I might be ;-) )

... I'd certainly pay £90 for it, maybe a touch more

Spend £200 on EBay on a frame and fork plus £50 - £100 on sundries and you have a tidy bike for £350 to £400. Much better than you could buy new. And I mean much better

And I already have the frame

Yeah you kind of missunderstood the sarcastic undertone in my post.
  • When did we start taking "How much is it worth" topics seriously?

    Rule 16 baby!

I'll give you half a bag of guinea pig poo for it.

Mmmmm not sure, quite a difference in the standards for:

    A guinea-pig poo bag, and
    A guinea pig-poo bag

Well I was looking for 6, but I guess I could settle for 5.

At the end of the day I just wanted to know potentially how much I could get for it in the classifieds, I think I've ascertained that it would be around 80 - 140 ish.

As such admin can close the thread as it's just getting silly!!

it is only worth what someone will pay for it. look at Ebay and tink of a number if it is too high then it will not sell. if too low it will go fast.
