Hi, i am looking for a set of aluminum rim clinchers between $1000 and $1500. i am 5'7" and 117 lbs. I currently have a cannondale supersix ultegra with mavic ksyrium equipes. I do crits on flat and rolling terrain, some time trials and fast paced group rides.
I heard the zipp 101's and shimano dura ace c24's are not bad, anybody have any experience with these?. Any other suggestions?

Please help, thanks

  • Based on your planned use I'd go for a semi deep section wheel - probably around 50mm

The DA 24's are nice and light (1380g) but not very aero and don't hold speed that well.

Mavic Cosmic's or DA C50's might be the way to go - not sure if they fit your $ budget though unless you go for a used set.

Plenty of used on Ebay around $1000.

    Good luck

Rubbish, they hold speed perfectly well for a shallow rim. I put several minutes into the "deep section wheel club" in time trials I have done. Thats not to say there isn't a benefit of deeper carbon rims, but if you only have the cash for one wheelset then the DA24's would be a good bet especially given your weight. What you might want to consider is whether you are willing to crash them and potentially write them off...

All wheels hold speed well if you try hard enough. C24's are light high climbing wheels. If where you live is flat then a hevier wheelset will work just as well. All low spoke wheels are fairly aerodynamic except s number of mavic's but deep rims mean shorter spokes and improves matters. Maybe a 30-40mm deep rim may be an option.

To be honest I roll arround on wheels far cheaper than these and have no trouble keeping up with the aero brigade if I try hard enough.

You have no idea what you're talking about. They're more aero than most.

@OP- For that money you can get some really nice handbuilt wheels which will be a godsend if you ever happen to wreck on a crit. I'd look at Hed Belgium C2's with Alchemy Elf/Orc hubs.

    Rubbish, ...

I would have used a slightly stronger word. They don't hold speed well????? Exactly what does that mean???
