Sram Red

I've been looking at new bikes now for what seem months....and I think I want titanium ???
A friend of a friend has a Van Nicholas Aquilo that is only four months old that he's selling,
he has been made redundant. The only thing is that the bike has a full Sram Red 20
speed set up on it and I've never used Sram before.
I wanted at least Campagnolo Chorus or even Shimano Dura-Ace but I have never given
Sram Red a thought, can anyone offer any advice.
I'm going to have to be quick as the bike is priced to sell and he has other people interested,
or so he tells me....

Sram Red is the top end of the Sram range and is used in the pelotons by various teams. The shifting method is slightly different in that the right paddle is used to move up and down the rear cassette and the left paddle does the same for the front mech. I have found the double 'click system' very accurate and easy to use. Hope this helps a bit.0

Red is overkill on that frame. What size is it and how much does he want for it?I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0

Of all of the mechanical shifting set ups, Red is by far the nicest to live with.
No silly buttons that you cannot reach from the drops, just one lever with a lovely sweep action and all of the benefit of the Double Tap system.
I also agree that it is way beyond the ranking of the frame it is on.

As you want titanium, and VN are well made frames, as long as sizes and geometry are right for you then why not. I certainly wouldnt be put off by Sram red - excellent groupset.0

My best mate rides a Scott Foil with Sram Red and from what I can see it's excellent, he loves it.
SloppySchleckonds, out of interest why is the group set too good for the frame ???
Great name by the way.0 -
The Aquilo Frame and Fork looks lovely, well reviewed, I nearly bought one last month. You're looking at just over £1250 new with the proper Fork, some people sell it apparently with a free Fork that isn't the VNT fork that Van Nicholas make for it.
What price is he after for the whole bike? What finishing kit does it have on it, does it have a VN Titanium Seatpost etc? ...and, importantly, with which wheels? (if you don't want to post the price he's asking on here, then PM me if you like and I'll let you know what I think with regard to having added one up to buy new so recently).
Don't worry about Sram Red, firstly, it is brilliant, and secondly it looks great on that frame, accenting goes with the red band next to the Aquilo logo on the Top Tube... in fact, I don't think any other groupset would look better on that frame, won't function better, and won't be lighter either.0 -
No. just no. it's rubbish imo. But it's all personal preference of course0

Thanks for all the replies, to answer the questions asked.
The bike is a four month old Van Nicholas Aquilo 54cm with a VN SLR carbon fork, a VN titanium seat post
& a Fizik Arione saddle. It has a VN alloy stem & bar with Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels, and 20 speed Sram
Red. He's asking £2250 ???
After doing some digging this afternoon and having a quick ring around I've managed to find a new Aquilo
as above but with a Van Nicholas saddle, Ksyrium Elite's and Sram Red 22 for £ 3600 with a delivery date
Jan/Feb 2014.
I'm going to have a look tonight, but why Sram Red 20 speed on a bike that's only four months old ?0 -
Offer him £1800 and let him beat you up to £2000? Sounds like a decent buy if it fits. VN are nice bikes if you want Titanium. Was impressed with them at the Bike Show (Astraeus was awesome)0

Well you can get the Red 10 speed groupset from totalcycling I think last time I looked for £899, frame and fork for £1250, Mavics are £300? So that's £2450 for the basics, plus say £300 for the rest of the stuff needed, so £2750 is what I'd roughly view that bike as costing new. I'd say it wants to be £1900 or under to be a bit of bargain providing that it's all unmarked...that would be my quick logic on it.
This is also based on it being the Sram Red 10 speed with the re-designed lever shape and the yaw front mech, if it isn't that, knock another couple of hundred quid off my bargain price range.0 -
Been and had a look and...no !!!!
The frame, fork, seat post, stem and bars are like new. The wheels are done and
need to go in a skip. The Sram Red was well used and on its last legs.
Wheels & Sram purchased through E-Bay !!!
The guy was looking for £2250 and thinks he'll get it, but not from me.
I'll keep looking and I'd really like new anyway.0 -

Mmm, some people are totally unrealistic when it comes to selling bikes. I recently sold my Giant and it was mint and I only got 2/3 of its value at 5 months old which is realistic I think. You could get the bike new for £2500 with a bit of haggling, what planet is the guy on?0 -

It sounds like he has taken off a decent set of wheels and another groupset, in order to keep them.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Good decision not to go for it.0

I'm the same. I've got Record on one bike and a mixture of Red and Force on another and whilst I've used Campag almost exclusively for the last 15 years, I'm loving SRAM! Sounds a little a agricultural when compared to Record but I really like the double tap levers and hoods.0 -
