Cycling in cold weather

I have one mountain and one city bike. I've been riding for almost 20 years.
During the last 4-5 years, I discovered how fun it is tor ride not only in warm summer and spring days but also in cold winter and fall days, even in rain.
I tried to share my experience on this article; your comments are appreciated if there is any.

I find your lack of base layers disturbing0

"avoiding mud".... ? I think you have that wrong. Once you have mud tyres, some waterproof socks and some decent shoes - and gloves you should embrace the mud. When it gets proper cold then the mud freezes... but just watch out for the thaw...

The biggest advantage is fewer other riders? Yeah cos the one other bike I see every 30 minutes in the summer is such a drag.0

But many of us don't have the Durham wilderness as our backyard!
Also remember that children get. Cold much quicker then adults. This doubly true if they are being towed rather than travelling under their own steam. It's worth packing an extra layer for them if they are reluctant to wrap up warm before you leave.0 -

Fall = Autumn. It's a great time to be out and about in New England.

I would add 'warm socks' to your list... merino are great as they are warm even when wet, but for really bad weather Sealskinz waterproof socks are my favourite. I'd also choose a buff over fleece neck gaiters and skullcaps as it's easy to oveheat, sweat and then get chilled... but that does depend on how hard you are riding.
If you are riding with kids then keeping them warm is essential - so put hats/gaiters/extra gloves etc in your pack if they don't already have them on, and take food!
...and riding off-road after dark can be an adventure.
