Too many punctures...alternative to Kenda Small Blocks

Hi Folks

As the subject suggests...I'm currently using Kenda Small Blocks for my commute to work - 10 miles each way, mainly canal path with some concrete - but have had quite a few punctures in the last few weeks, mainly thorns and the odd fish hook.

The Kenda's roll well, but seem very thin...can anyone recommend an alternative that isn't too heavy and slow, but will give better protection against pointy things? Are Schwalbe Marathons the way to go? The canal path does get a bit soft at this time of year so something with a bit of grip would be useful... I'm on a Rockride 8.1, so standard 26" MBT tyres.

Thanks!

Would it be worth trying the Slime tubes??

I ran them in m Maxxis DTH tyres, with them being VERY thin tyres but minimal weight i ran Dr Sludge in them and never had a problem at all riding anywhere, could be worth a try and cheaper than buy new tyres :)
  • You can get some Fenwicks Airtight, this is injected through the valve into your current tubes.

Hadn't heard of this stuff - anyone tried it? Sounds promising from the reviews.

    Thanks

Id say slicks with a puncture preventing band, like conti gator skins would be a better bet.

Try a pair of Michelin Country Rocks. Similar to the Kenda Small Blocks but the blocks are much closer together to prevent stones and sharp things getting to that thin layer of rubber between the blocks. Also lighter and about the same price.

If you want something faster rolling then something like a Continental Sport Contact 1.6 will do the job, be lighter and has reasonable puncture protection strip. Just a bit more expensive though.

The Marathon Plus use just about every trick to prevent punctures (protection strip, kevlar weave, thicker and harder rubber) and have a reputation as the toughest tyres out there but they are extrememely heavy and slow (kinda pricey too).

Actually, I use it myself. I haven't had a puncture since installing it but then I haven't ridden over thorns either. Might test the claims with a pin!

I'd do this too - check spa cycles.
