Ultegra 11 Speed

All,

I've broken one of my 105 shifters and was wondering about compatibility re: new 11 speed.

Elsewhere on the internet indicates that the spacing hasn't shifted from 10 to 11 speed, so will the new Ultegra 11 speed mechanical shifters work with my 105 derailleurs acceptably? Would I be able to get the shifters and a cassette now, live with iffy but workable shifting for a month and get the derailleur(s)? Or does the whole drivetrain need replacing to go from 10 to 11?

Comments

  • The spacing has changed as the chain is thinner and the space required for an 11 speed cassette isn't 10% more than for a 10 speed cassette.

Also if the shifter can select 11 gears how's that gonna work when you only have 10??

    Get new 10 speed shifters.

Mechs will cope (they just move how much the shifter tells em) and if all you are replacing are the shifters it will probably work (just not as well as it should) and you will have more clicks than you need.

In short, not a good option. Get another 10 speed replacement.

11 speed is not an upgrade either. Every time we get increased speeds the quality and function of the set up gets worse (components are too thin).

If it were me I would junk the 11 speed idea totally and get 9 speed Ultegra - loads better than the subsequent 10 and 11 stuff.
    Yellow is the new Black.
  • Thanks both. Will chew on it for a while, but looks like I'll stick to 10 speed.

Most 10 speed Shimano wheels won't take the longer 11 speed cassette.

^ About the only pre-11 speed wheels that will work with 11 speed are Mavic, which uses the Campag cassette width even with Shimano cogs. No 10 speed Shimano wheels whatever will accept an 11 speed cassette, however, Shimano 11 speed wheels will take a 10 speed cassette provided an extra spacer is used. There will still be more dish though...
