Indexing Problems

Hi,
I have been having problems with my indexing dropping form the largest rear sprocket to the smallest (low to high gears). Going up is fine.
So far I have replaced the chain and cassette (both were worn), and the inner and outer cables. It is an M952 XTR mech and a set up unknown but working Shimano shifters. The hanger is 100% straight but the cage on the rear mech does seem to point towards the spokes although all the pieces are straight (worn bushes or just normal?
I have indexed the gears time after time but still have this problem. Any ideas?

problems changing gears in that direction are either too much tension in the cable from the adjustment OR friction in the inner and outer (muck or poor assembly or routing or damage)
if you want to strip the mech

Apart from checking that the cable is moving easily, check that the high stop on the mech is adjusted correctly. I had a problem like this when fitting a new mech. Basically the difference between the chain being in the spokes or sitting sweetly on the biggest cog was just a half turn of the high stop. It was quite easy to incorrectly adjust the high stop and compensate by putting tension into the cable so that the indexing was almost (but not quite) one gear out. Shifting to a bigger cog was OK, but shifting to a smaller one was awful.0

Cheers. I have tried varying setups with the limit screw but having done some reading it sounds like the return spring could be a little past its best...afterall it is pushing 10 years old I think. Time for a nice new XT Shadow Plus I think!Remember Rule #50

Even a new 9 spd Deore mech is going to be better than a 10 year old XTR mech. Things have moved on a fair bit and shifting will be much better only weight would be worse.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0

Nope its not a sweeping statement I have experience of both older XTR and the new style shadow Deore. The Deore is a better shifting mech though heavier than an XTR. If your mech is still working well thats good but not many well used XTR mechs will be in as good condition.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0

I would agree older mech were great but time takes it toll.0 -
Actually use does, time sitting doing nothing does very little!
Shifts just as well as the XT shadow it replaced....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
On my last bike i suffered with an issue where i could index 9 of the 10 gears ok, but either top or bottom would not shift well, it turned out to be a very slightly bent mech hanger, this happend a number of times on that bike so if indexing suddenly went, I swapped the hanger.0
